The House Clinic’s William H. Slattery III, M.D took a short break from performing ear surgery and treating disorders such as hearing loss and acoustic neuromas with House’s all-star team of neurotologists and neurosurgeons to appear as a doctor treating hearing loss and tinnitus suffered by Bradley Cooper’s aging, grizzled rock star character. Along with showing how hearing loss can affect individuals and their interpersonal relationships, the film prominently shows an actor using hearing aids.
Dr. Slattery’s stint as a movie star didn’t end on the big screen, as he also attended the premiere of A Star is Born Monday evening in Hollywood, mingling with the film’s stars and musician Lukas Nelson, who collaborated with the stars served as a musical advisor on the film.
“House Clinic has been diagnosing and treating musiians’ hearing-related issues for decades, so it’s a privilege to be asked to showcase a snippet of that expertise in front of the cameras,” Dr. Slattery said. “It was a truly unique experience working on this film, as well as attending the premiere, and of course it’s always a positive for the public to be reminded about some of the health risks that follow years of loud music.”
A Star Is Born, which is Cooper’s directorial debut, stars the actor as singer-songwriter Jackson Maine and pop star Lady Gaga as his newfound protégé and love interest who soon finds herself in the spotlight.
As part of its work treating various disorders, the Los Angeles-based House Clinic has been at the forefront of surgical advancements for hearing loss and ear-related issues for more than 60 years, having developed and perfected the cochlear implant and auditory brain stem implant for completely deaf patients alongside scientists from the House Ear Institute.
