Center for Infectious Disease Research (client) recently spoke with The Seattle Times about their milestone in developing a vaccine for malaria. Stefan Kappe and his team created a weakened form of the parasite to use as a basis for the vaccine. While this idea isn’t new, their approach certainly is; instead of syringes, they use living mosquitoes to inject the weakened parasites into their volunteers. The next round of human trials will begin later this year and will be a crucial test of the vaccine concept.
